Garden tractors, sometimes referred to as 'Ride On Mowers' or 'Lawn tractors' fall into several different categories depending on their method of grass ejection.
- Side discharge machines are very suitable for cutting large areas quickly, using the minimum of power. The grass is cut once and thrown from the side of the machine. This grass will be seen on the surface.
- Mulching, or 'recycling' mowers keep the grass in the machine for longer, therfore cutting each blade many times. This results in short clippings which can be invisible if the grass is cut regularly. Mowing will be a little slower than with side discharge.
- Collection mowers collect the clippings for disposal away from the lawn. This can mean that cutting is slower but the finish should be devoid of any clippings
